Why concrete batching plant need lightning protection

In modern construction projects, cement tanks, as core equipment in concrete batching plants, play an indispensable role. Because their main structures are typically made of steel, they are vulnerable to lightning strikes in environments prone to frequent lightning.

Why concrete batching plant need lightning protection

With the arrival of summer, thunderstorms are becoming more frequent, and the potential threat of lightning to equipment and facilities is becoming increasingly prominent. Concrete batching plants located in open areas are particularly vulnerable due to their tall structures and complex operating environments, exposing their automated control systems to greater lightning risks.

A lightning strike can not only damage expensive equipment but also cause serious safety incidents, threatening the lives of workers. Therefore, ensuring that cement tanks have effective lightning protection measures is crucial. Safety is paramount, and any negligence can lead to unforeseen consequences. Comprehensive and reliable lightning protection measures are essential to safeguard personnel and equipment.

Protective Device: Lightning Rods

To prevent direct lightning damage to concrete batching plants, the first step is to install lightning rods on cement tanks. These rods are reliably connected to the ground through steel or other efficient connectors, creating a comprehensive lightning protection network. This way, when lightning strikes, the lightning rod can quickly conduct the lightning current to the ground, protecting the concrete batching plant from damage.

To effectively prevent the impact of direct lightning strikes on concrete mixing plants, we have strategically installed lightning rods on the tops of cement tanks. For each plant, we carefully select a tank near the control room and securely install a lightning rod there. Mixing plants are classified as general industrial buildings and clearly fall into Category III lightning protection. This design and layout ensures safe equipment operation and effectively reduces potential risks from lightning.

We can install a lightning rod on the top of the cement tank, using the rolling ball method, with a rolling ball radius R of 60 meters. The lightning rod consists of a 1.5-meter-long lightning rod and two metal rolling balls, the upper one with a diameter of 30 cm and the lower one with a diameter of 60 cm. These lightning rods are connected to the ground via flat iron, ensuring that the ground resistance does not exceed 10 ohms. The attached lightning rod installation diagram provides a more intuitive understanding of the layout and connection method.

Grounding

Grounding is a key step in the lightning protection design of concrete batching plants. Users should design a grounding grid specifically for their local conditions. Typically, powder tanks are equipped with a separate lightning protection grounding grid. This grid not only provides lightning protection but also serves as a secondary grounding for the neutral conductor N. The lightning protection grounding grid for the powder tank must maintain a reliable electrical connection to the tank, ensuring that the ground resistance does not exceed 10 ohms.

Protective grounding is also essential. Protective grounding involves establishing a good conductive connection between non-current-carrying metal parts of a high-voltage power system (such as motor casings, high-voltage cabinet casings, and operating console casings) and the ground. In the event of a power distribution system fault, protective grounding serves as a return path for current flow, ensuring equipment and personnel safety.

Ground resistance is a key parameter for measuring grounding system performance. In a concrete batching plant automatic control system, different electrical components have varying ground resistance requirements, but most components require a ground resistance below 10Ω.
